Why six verticals, and not twenty.
When we started Moronacity in 2017, we launched with eleven sections and quickly realized we could staff maybe four of them properly. So we collapsed. Housing and Money stayed because that is what readers emailed about. Culture stayed because it was the only one our founding team could write with authority. Transit, Careers, and Data came later, each one because a specific reporter agreed to build it from scratch.
The rule we follow is simple: a vertical lives as long as we can publish at least one original, footnoted story in it per week. If we can't, we shutter it and tell readers why. Lifestyle did not survive that test. Pets did not survive that test. We do not run a vertical we cannot honestly staff, and we will not pretend otherwise.
If you're new here, the two desks most readers start with are Housing — it is the newsletter's highest-converting section — and Data, because the City Cost Index is the thing our readers actually forward. Everything else, treat as a library you dip into.
