A Note From The Editor
Why we started Moronacity — and who it's actually for.
I started Moronacity in 2017 out of a one-bedroom in Crown Heights, between rent renewals and a stack of neighborhood zines that kept getting the city's numbers wrong. I was tired of city journalism that talked down to readers, or worse — published a "median rent" number that excluded half the city's actual renters. I wanted a publication that would do the math, cite the methodology, and tell the truth about what it costs to live here.
Seven years later we are 18 full-time people working out of a fourth-floor walkup on Lafayette Street. We do not take outside venture money. We do not run sponsored content disguised as reporting. Roughly 22,400 of you pay for memberships and subscriptions — that is the entire business model. When we say reader-supported, we mean it literally: if the bills don't clear, the publication doesn't run. You are the publisher.
This page exists because you asked for it. It is the masthead, the editorial standards, the corrections policy, and the receipts — the same document we'd hand a journalist, a source, or a future hire. Read it skeptically. Then send us what we got wrong.
